The Moorings took shape in 1957, when developer Milton Link, with financing connected to Cuban entrepreneur Julio Lobo, purchased the Crayton Tract and ultimately assembled roughly 960 acres of coastal land north of Old Naples.

The vision was ambitious for its time: transform mangrove and marsh into a water-oriented residential community with canals, bay access, and dedicated Gulf beachfront set aside for residents. Doctors Pass — the inlet connecting Moorings Bay to the Gulf — was dredged and improved around 1960, reshaping access for boaters as residential development advanced.

The Moorings Property Owners Association was established in 1968. The community also became associated with private golf and country club amenities, making The Moorings one of the earlier Naples developments to combine beach, waterfront living, and organized community amenities in one coastal setting.
